Second iOS Lock screen bypass discovered, doesn't really expose filesystem

Second iOS Lock screen bypass discovered, doesn't really expose filesystem

A couple of weeks ago a bug was discovered in the iOS 6 lock screen that allowed a person to access the Phone app, make phone calls, and get at a user?s contacts, without entering a passcode. Now a new, similar bug has been found, but it is being reported that this one will actually allow you to read from and write to the device, with unauthorized access to the filesystem. However, this does not appear to actually be the case.

A video posted to YouTube on the 15th demonstrates two suspected bugs. The first shows how to bypass the lock screen to access the phone using a series of well timed button presses and is similar to the original bypass method reported a day earlier. The second glitch shown is similar, but slightly harder to accomplish and rather than resulting in access to the Phone app, the screen goes completely black with the exception of a normal status bar being present at the top of the screen. With the phone in this buggy state, the user can plug their iPhone into a computer and browse the devices filesystem, never having entered the devices passcode.

At first glance this does seem to be a bug that allows unauthorized access your device?s filesystem, but something isn?t right here. Apple invests a lot in securing their devices, and one of the selling points of the iPhone is its ability to encrypt its contents. As Apple details in their iOS Security paper, depending on the type of file, part of its encryption may include using the device?s passcode. It?s not that it would be completely impossible for there to be a bug in iOS where Apple blundered their security so badly that it completely bypassed a user?s passcode and any encryption, it just doesn?t seem likely.

It makes sense how a bug could occur that let?s somebody bypass the passcode to access the Phone app. The Phone app has to be accessible whether a device is locked or not. Users need to be able to make emergency calls, and the iPhone needs to be able to show you who?s calling; it needs access to your contacts with you needing to enter your passcode. This kind of a bug is completely different from one that would allow unauthorized access to all of the data on your device. So how is it that the person in the video is able to access their filesystem without entering the passcode?

The first time you plug a locked device into a computer with a passcode set, iTunes will display an error saying the device has a passcode set. You will be required to unlock the device before iTunes, or any application, can access the contents of the device. With the device plugged in, once you enter your passcode, iTunes will never require you to enter it again. iTunes has some mechanism in place that will now allow your computer to talk to the device, even when the lock screen is present. Had the person in the video plugged their device in to a computer that it had never been plugged in to before, they would have been met with an error message instead.

The lock screen bugs definitely pose a security threat, and one that Apple has already promised to fix. A bug that would allow an average user to bypass the passcode entirely and gain complete access to a user?s data would be on an entirely different level and pose a much greater threat. Such a flaw may be found in iOS one day, but today is not that day.

(AP) ? With billions of dollars at stake, the trial to figure out how much more BP and other companies should pay for the nation's worst offshore oil spill began Monday with the federal government saying the oil giant was mostly to blame for a disaster caused by putting profits ahead of safety.

Justice Department attorney Mike Underhill said BP PLC, which leased the rig and owned the blown-out Macondo well, said the disaster resulted from the London-based company's "culture of corporate recklessness."

"The evidence will show that BP put profits before people, profits before safety and profits before the environment," Underhill said during opening statements.

Eleven workers died when the rig exploded April 20, 2010, and millions of gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier is hearing the case without a jury and ? barring a settlement ? will decide months from now how much more money BP and other companies involved in the ill-fated drilling project owe for their roles in the environmental catastrophe.

"Despite BP's attempts to shift the blame to other parties," Underhill said, "by far the primary fault for this disaster belongs to BP."

Attorney Jim Roy, who represents individuals and businesses hurt by the spill, said BP executives applied "huge financial pressure" on its drilling managers to "cut costs and rush the job." The project was more than $50 million over budget and behind schedule at the time of the blowout, Roy said.

"BP repeatedly chose speed over safety," Roy said, quoting from a report by an expert who may testify later.

Brad Brian, a lawyer for rig owner Transocean Ltd., said the Swiss-based drilling company had an experienced, well-trained crew on the rig. Brian said the Transocean workers' worst mistake may have been placing too much trust in the BP rig supervisors on the rig.

"And they paid for that trust with their lives," Brian said. "They died not because they weren't trained properly. They died because critical information was withheld from them."

Lawyers for BP and Halliburton, the cement contractor that constructed the cement barrier to prevent oil or gas from flowing up the well, will outline their cases later Monday.

Roy said the spill also resulted from rig owner Transocean Ltd.'s "woeful" safety culture. He said the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig failed to properly train its crew, calling it a "chronic problem allowed by Transocean management to go uncorrected."

"The work force was not always aware of the hazards they were exposed to," Roy said. "They don't know what they don't know."

Roy also said Halliburton deserved some of the blame for providing BP with a product that was "poorly designed, not properly tested and was unstable."

Underhill heaped blame on BP executives and onshore managers for cost-cutting decisions they made in the months and weeks leading up the disaster. He said the primary "rig-based" cause of the blowout was a botched safety test in which two BP rig supervisors, Robert Kaluza and Donald Vidrine, disregarded abnormally high pressure readings that should have been glaring indications of trouble.

Underhill said Vidrine and Mark Hafle, a BP engineer in Houston, discussed the test results over the phone less than an hour before the explosion but failed to take steps that could have prevented the blast.

"Instead, both men, armed with knowledge that could have saved 11 lives and prevented the Gulf oil spill, did absolutely nothing," Underhill said.

Kaluza and Vidrine have been indicted on federal manslaughter charges. Hafle hasn't been charged with wrongdoing.

BP has said it already has racked up more than $24 billion in spill-related expenses and has estimated it will pay a total of $42 billion to fully resolve its liability for the disaster.

But the trial attorneys for the federal government, Gulf states and attorneys for people and businesses hope to convince the judge that the company is liable for much more.

Hundreds of attorneys have worked on the case, generating roughly 90 million pages of documents, logging nearly 9,000 docket entries and taking more than 300 depositions of witnesses who could testify at trial.

"In terms of sheer dollar amounts and public attention, this is one of the most complex and massive disputes ever faced by the courts," said Fordham University law professor Howard Erichson, an expert in complex litigation.

Barbier has promised he won't let the case drag on for years as has the litigation over the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, which still hasn't been completely resolved. He encouraged settlement talks that already have resolved billions of dollars in spill-related claims.

In December, Barbier gave final approval to a settlement between BP and Plaintiffs' Steering Committee lawyers representing Gulf Coast businesses and residents who claim the spill cost them money. BP estimates it will pay roughly $8.5 billion to resolve tens of thousands of these claims, but the deal doesn't have a cap.

BP resolved a Justice Department criminal probe by agreeing to plead guilty to manslaughter and other charges and pay $4 billion in criminal penalties. Transocean reached a separate settlement with the federal government, pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge and agreeing to pay $1.4 billion in criminal and civil penalties.

But there's plenty left for the lawyers to argue about at trial, given that the federal government and Gulf states haven't resolved civil claims against the company that could be worth more than $20 billion.

One of the biggest questions facing Barbier will be to determine if BP was guilty of gross negligence.

Under the Clean Water Act, which is designed to punish companies and prevent future spills, a polluter pays a minimum of $1,100 per barrel of spilled oil; the fines nearly quadruple to about $4,300 a barrel for companies found guilty of grossly negligent behavior, meaning BP could be on the hook for nearly $18 billion.

BP, meanwhile, argues the federal government's estimate of how much oil spewed from the well ? more than 200 million gallons ? is inflated by at least 20 percent. Clean Water Act penalties are based on how many barrels of oil spilled.

Barbier plans to hold the trial in at least two phases and may issue partial rulings at the end of each. The first phase, which could last three months, is designed to determine what caused the blowout and assign percentages of blame to the companies involved. The second phase will address efforts to stop the flow of oil from the well and aims to determine how much crude spilled into the Gulf.

The Deepwater Horizon rig blew up 50 miles off Louisiana in an explosion that investigators blamed on time-saving, cost-cutting decisions by BP and its drilling partners in cementing the well shaft.

Following several failed attempts that introduced the American public to such industry terms as "top kill" and "junk shot," BP finally capped the well on the sea floor after more than 85 days.

By then, the well had spewed an estimated 172 million gallons of crude into the Gulf, fouling marshes and beaches, killing wildlife and closing vast areas to fishing.

Scientists warn that the spill's full effect on the Gulf food chain may not be known for years. But they have reported oil-coated coral reefs that were dying, and fish have been showing up in nets with lesions and illnesses that biologists fear could be oil-related. Oil churned up by storms could be washing up for years.

US government to join suit against Lance Armstrong

NBC's Pete Williams reports on the Justice Department's plans to notify the court about the Lance Armstrong suit on Friday.

By Pete Williams, Justice Correspondent, NBC News

Lance Armstrong faces a powerful new adversary -- the United States government.

The Justice Department will notify a federal court Friday that it is joining one of his former racing teammates in suing him for using performance-enhancing drugs during the Tour de France,?legal sources told NBC News.

The government is signing on to a lawsuit filed two years ago by Floyd Landis, one of Armstrong's former Tour de France teammates who has already admitted cheating. Among its claims: Landis saw Armstrong store and then re-inject his own blood to boost his performance, and Armstrong twice gave Landis banned hormones before races.

The government?s legal theory in joining the lawsuit is that when Armstrong agreed to race for the U.S. Postal Service team a decade ago in the Tour de France, he defrauded the government, violating its strict ban on illegal drugs, all the while claiming he did not use them.

Though the government?s action presents a serious new legal threat to Armstrong, the Justice Department case is not foolproof: Legal experts say Armstrong could argue that his contract with the team owners never explicitly prohibited blood doping, and he could claim that he never signed any agreement directly with the Postal Service that banned the practice.

But if the government wins, Armstrong could face huge fines, because the Postal Service paid at least $30 million to sponsor his racing teams.

Armstrong's attorney, Robert Luskin, said in a statement Friday that the Postal Service had no losses deserving of compensation.

"Lance and his representatives worked constructively over these last weeks with federal lawyers to resolve this case fairly, but those talks failed because we disagree about whether the Postal Service was damaged," Luskin said. "The Postal's Services own studies show that the Service benefited tremendously from its sponsorship -- benefits totaling more than $100 million."

After denying for years that he cheated, Armstrong gave a general admission last month in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.?

"This issue of performance enhancers, to me, we're going to pump up our tires, put water in our bottles and, oh yeah, that, too, is going to happen. That was it," he said.

The cycling website Velo News reported this week that Travis Tygart, the CEO of the US Anti-Doping Agency, wrote to Attorney General Eric Holder last month, urging the government to join the Landis lawsuit.

A decision by the Justice Department to join the case ?in order to get to the bottom (or top) of this massive fraud would also be viewed by the press and public as necessary and legitimate,? the letter said.

Ninety killed in Thursday's Damascus bombings: group

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Ninety people died in Thursday's four bombings across Damascus, a violence monitoring group said, making it one of the bloodiest days in the Syrian capital since the outbreak of a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad nearly two years ago.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, quoting figures it said were compiled from hospitals and other medical sources, said at least 60 of the dead were killed in a powerful car bomb blast in the Mazraa district of central Damascus, near the Russian Embassy and offices of Assad's ruling Baath Party.

The others were killed in three coordinated bombings in the north-eastern district of Barzeh, the Britain-based group said.

Syrian state media put the death toll from the Mazraa bombing at 53, with more than 200 wounded. Both activists and officials said most of those killed were civilians, including children.

In addition to the violence in the capital, more than 200 people were killed elsewhere including in the Damascus suburbs, the southern city of Deraa and northern commercial hub of Aleppo, bringing Thursday's death to around 300 - one of the highest in a single day, the Observatory said.

The United Nations says 70,000 people have died in Syria's conflict, the bloodiest and most protracted of the uprisings which have convulsed the Arab world in the last two years.

Russia, a staunch ally of Assad's, accused the United States on Friday of having double standards over the violence in Syria, saying Washington had blocked a U.N. Security Council statement condemning the Mazraa car bomb.

"We ... see in it a very dangerous tendency by our American colleagues to depart from the fundamental principle of unconditional condemnation of any terrorist act, a principle which secures the unity of the international community in the fight against terrorism," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attacks, but the al Qaeda-linked hardline rebel group Jabhat al-Nusra has said it has carried out dozens of attacks in the past year, including devastating bombings in Damascus and Aleppo.

Police cold case: Man dies decades after he was shot and paralyzed

Johnson (ABC/News 10)

Police in Sacramento, Calif., are investigating the death of a 62-year-old man who died from a shooting?36 years after it happened.

Walter Johnson Jr., who was left paralyzed from the 1977 attack, died from complications related to his paralysis, leading police to rule his death a homicide. They are asking the public for help in its investigation.

It's technically the fourth homicide in the California state capital this year.

According to a press release issued by the Sacramento Police Department, Johnson was driving to his parents' home on April 9, 1977, at approximately 3:48 a.m. when three unidentified men blocked the roadway. They confronted Johnson in his vehicle, and a struggle ensued. Johnson was shot in the upper body. The suspects then robbed Johnson and "fled in a red or brown Ford Pinto." The three suspects?described as Hispanic adults?were never apprehended.

Police are hoping that advances in technology, and perhaps even guilty consciences, may lead to a break in the cold case.

"Sometimes people ... want to talk about it over the years," SPD spokeswoman Michele Gigante told the Sacramento Press. "It's still up in the air at this point, but do I think we have a good chance of solving this? Sure."

Sacramento police are offering up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Tim Southee recovering well from thumb injury ? Cricket News Update

New Zealand seamer, Tim Southee, is confident of reuniting with the rest of his teammates during the ongoing home series against England after recovering from a thumb injury he sustained in late December.

The fast bowler injured himself while fielding during a domestic game for Northern District and was ruled out from the team?s tour of South Africa, where they were lost the T20I and Test series, before claiming win in the 50-over format. He was originally omitted for the shortest version due to the birth of his first child but missed out on selection completely due to extent of the injury. ?

The player had been in supreme form before that, helping his side to claim a famous victory on Sri Lankan soil. The bowler picked up 12 wickets in the two-match series, eight of which came in the second Test, which his side won by 167 runs.

He has set sights on returning to the domestic circuit first, where his side will be facing Wellington in the Plunket Shield from February 14. Ironically, Southee picked up the injury when the two sides last played each other in the same competition two months ago.

"I'm excited to get back out there. It's probably the longest layoff I've had. There wasn't a break but I ripped the ligaments clean off the bone. It was in a full cast for two and a bit weeks, then a splint for a while after that. Four or five weeks after surgery I was back into a bit of bowling, and I was also able to do some running and gym work," Southee was quoted as saying by Fairfax NZ News.

The 24-year-old is also hopeful of playing some part in the upcoming ODI series against England, which will commence following the conclusion of the T20I series, currently locked at one a piece. In addition to that, both sides will further lock horns in the Tests, beginning from next month.

"I'll play this game and keep in touch with the New Zealand medical staff and Brendon [McCullum, the captain] and Mike [Hesson, the coach] as well. I guess it's up to them what they want to do, whether [I'll] be involved in the one-day series or just get myself right for the Test series."

Sooners' O-line coach joins Wilson at Indiana

Related Story: John E. Hoover: Mangino's personal baggage too much for Oklahoma return

"Our family has enjoyed a tremendous experience at Oklahoma," Patton said in an OU-released statement. "It has truly been a pleasure to work with (athletic director) Joe Castiglione, Coach (Bob) Stoops and the entire football staff, as well as the many talented student-athletes that I was privileged to coach at OU.

"I'm excited about the new challenge at Indiana, and am extremely grateful for being afforded a chance to work with Oklahoma football the past seven years."

Patton informed his players Monday morning that he was leaving. Later Monday, those players used Twitter to express both appreciation and surprise over the news.

"Coach Patton is my favorite coach I've had," OU center Gabe Ikard tweeted. "Taught me a lot about football and a lot about life. Really going to miss him."

"Going to miss Coach Patton and I wish him the best of luck," starting guard Bronson Irwin tweeted.

Christian Daimler, the one high school offensive lineman the Sooners signed last week, tweeted: "Damn. Coach Pattons gone."

It is Stoops' second staff shakeup in as many years. He cut loose secondary coach Willie Martinez a year ago to make way for Mike Stoops' return as both secondary coach and defensive coordinator.

"We appreciate the contributions that James made to our program over the past seven seasons," Bob Stoops said in OU's statement. "He was a valued member of a staff that helped us win five Big 12 championships. We wish James and his family the best."

Patton will assist with the defensive line and special teams and serve as recruiting coordinator at Indiana. He rejoins Wilson, a coach he served with at Miami (Ohio), Northwestern and OU dating back to 1998.

"I have a lot of trust and confidence in James Patton," Wilson said in an Indiana press release. "James was one of the toughest players that I've ever coached. He has been in the big time arena, is a Midwest guy and brings some balance to our staff."

Patton joined the Sooners in 2006 when Wilson, then OU's offensive line coach, took over for Chuck Long as offensive coordinator.

Patton remained in Norman when Wilson left to become Indiana's head coach after the 2010 season, but he was reassigned to coach guards and centers only. Stoops promoted on-campus recruiting coordinator Bruce Kittle to coach tackles and tight ends at the time.

In his new role, Patton pieced together two productive seasons from the line's interior despite constant adversity. He lost starting center Ben Habern for half the 2011 season, but shifted guard Ikard to center and helped guard Tyler Evans become an All-Big 12 Conference performer.

Last season, Patton lost both Habern and Evans to season-ending injuries before preseason camp started. Ikard stayed at center and became first-team All-Big 12. Irwin took over for Evans at right guard, joining Ikard and left guard Adam Shead to help the Sooners average 506 yards and 40 points.

One name that has surfaced as a potential Patton replacement is Mark Mangino, Stoops' original offensive line coach who became the Sooners' offensive coordinator during their 2000 national championship season. Mangino left to take over Kansas after the '01 season.

Mangino's tenure at KU ended in 2009 amid multiple reports of player mistreatment.

He has not coached since, although he has been a frequent visitor to Norman in the interim. He was on the field before the Sooners' regular season-ending victory at TCU last December.

Google bug returns porn for mathematical queries

A bug in Google search ? fortunately, a rare one ? gives porn links and images as results when the user puts certain mathematical equations into the search box. It's certainly strange, but there is an explanation.

It was discovered by a user of the Q&A site Quora, who wrote a question asking why the search "-4^(1/4)" should return not just the result of that equation but hundreds of links to a wide variety of porn sites.

The search still works, and you can try it yourself, although if you're at work, you might want to wait until the boss is out of sight. Results are similarly inappropriate with image search.

So what's happening here? Another user of Quora (who stayed anonymous to avoid being associated with porn by Google, clearly a serious risk) broke it down. Google calculates the numerical query as it should, but also runs it as a normal text search as well, just in case. When it does that, it interprets things differently: the parentheses act like quote marks and the negative sign is used to exclude unwanted words from results.

The end result is that Google tries to find pages that have a 1 and a 4 next to each other... but no 4s. Obviously there are no pages that both have and don't have a 4, and as Google search engineer Jeremy Hoffman showed up at Quora to explain, it should return no results.

Instead, the bug results in these porn sites being shown, which have been extensively optimized to show up on as many searches as possible, even unrelated ones. The optimization is so strong that porn is showing up even for queries that don't make sense! Other contradictory queries return porn results, but not all.

Google declined to comment to NBC News. But the Google engineer who answered the question says that a bug fix is on the way, so you can calculate on Google with no fear of smutty links clogging up your results.

US loses to Italy in 1st round of Fed Cup

RIMINI, Italy (AP) ? The United States was eliminated in the first round of the Fed Cup, losing to Italy 3-2 Sunday when Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci defeated Varvara Lepchenko and Liezel Huber in the decisive doubles match.

Errani and Vinci, the top-ranked doubles team, won 6-2, 6-2 against an understrength American team. The U.S. was without Serena and Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens because of injuries.

"I'm really proud of the team, they played their hearts out every single match," U.S. captain Mary Joe Fernandez said. "We knew it was going to be an uphill battle."

The U.S. led 2-1 after Lepchenko beat Errani 7-5, 6-2 in Sunday's first reverse singles. But Vinci stopped Jamie Hampton 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to set up the crucial doubles for Errani and Vinci, who ended the best-of-five World Group series.

"They both played a great match and Roberta did a couple of really exceptional shots at the net," Italy captain Corrado Barazzutti said. "I don't really say much to them when they play, they're the best, what can you say? I try not to bother them when they play, they know each other so well."

Italy will host defending champion Czech Republic in the semifinals, a rematch of last year's semis. The Czech Republic defeated visiting Australia 4-0.

In the other semifinal, it's Slovakia at Russia. Slovakia topped host Serbia 3-2, and host Russia downed Japan 3-2.

Italy was a big favorite to earn a third straight victory over the U.S. after beating the Americans in the Fed Cup finals in 2009 and '10.

Excellent play from Lepchenko, however, put the U.S. ahead after an error-strewn performance from Errani.

Lepchenko raced ahead 4-2 before Errani rallied to lead 5-4 and was serving for the set. But the 21st-ranked American broke again and took the next two games, securing the opening set when Errani hit a shot into the net.

Lepchenko moved in front 4-1 in the second set to earn a second straight victory in her Fed Cup debut after beating Vinci in three sets on Saturday.

"It was a long match yesterday," Lepchenko said. "So I was up and down a bit, but once my body warmed up I started playing better and better, and then in the second set I got pumped and really got going. Clay is one of my favorite surfaces. I was born on clay, so I guess it comes to me naturally."

Vinci then kept Italy in the series, despite playing with a thigh injury from Saturday's loss. After inconsistent play in the first two sets, Vinci pulled ahead 5-0 in the third.

"It was an important third set that Jamie lost," Fernandez said. "We could have capitalized there but we didn't. But this is the closest we've come against the Italian team, and we were playing away.

"I'm really proud of everyone, how they handled the atmosphere. ... There were a lot of new experiences and overall I think it's a positive experience."

Vinci played even better in doubles and was particularly sharp at the net as she improved her record to 18-0 in Fed Cup doubles? the best in the competition's history.

"It's maybe the best day of my career," Vinci said. "We really wanted it. We were very tired but today we managed to show a lot of heart, a lot of personality. We are a great team. I had to have various treatments and physiotherapy, massages almost until midnight. Yesterday was a horrible day and I'm glad I managed to come back today. "

Errani and Vinci won the doubles title at the Australian Open last month, their third victory in the last four Grand Slams, and they were in command against Lepchenko and Huber.

"Of course, it's very disappointing today not to win, disappointing to lose again to them, that's what hurts the most," Huber said. "They (Vinci and Errani) are the weapon. They're like sisters and best friends. They can read each other's body language. That's why they're No. 1 and think they'll be that for many years to come. They both have different styles and they stick to that. I really enjoy watching them play, but not against me."

Hacker gains access to Bush family emails, photos

(AP Photo/Charles Krupa, File)

(AP) ? Turns out even former presidents can fall prey to hackers.

A mysterious email hacker apparently accessed private photos and messages sent between members of the Bush family, including both retired commanders in chief.

The Secret Service is investigating the breach, which appeared to yield little more than a few snapshots and some family discussions. But the incident illustrated how easily hackers can pry into private lives, even those of one of the nation's most prominent and closely guarded political clans.

The Smoking Gun website displayed photos it said came from the hacker, including one that purported to show the elder Bush during his recent stay in a Houston hospital, where the 88-year-old spent almost two months undergoing treatment for complications from a bronchial infection.

The website said the hacker, who went by the online moniker "Guccifer," gained access to the material through Bush family members and friends.

That could have made George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush vulnerable, even if they have the finest security that technology can provide. A friend or relative who clicked on a deceptive link or unwittingly downloaded a suspicious program might accidentally have exposed correspondence involving the former presidents.

"We can't control what our friends do," said Dan Wallach, manager of Rice University's computer security lab and a computer science professor at the Houston school. "If my friends post a photo of me on Facebook, I can untag myself, but I can't delete it. It's not my photo. And that's just a general-purpose problem."

Reached by email, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush called the hacking "outrageous."

The rest of the family stayed quiet.

"There's a criminal investigation and, as such, there's nothing else we can say," said Jim McGrath, a spokesman for George H.W. Bush in Houston.

Freddy Ford, a spokesman for George W. Bush, who has a home in Dallas, declined to comment.

Free email accounts from commercial providers are especially vulnerable to hackers who exploit easy-to-use features to reset email passwords. Many passwords can be reset by a hacker who discovers, for example, the birth year of a person's mother, a father's middle name or the name of a favorite pet.

That's what happened to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in 2008, when she was the Republican vice presidential candidate.

"That's the first thing I thought of," said Tyler Moore, an assistant professor of computer science at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. "The key here is when you're famous or a well-known person or celebrity, there's not a lot you can do if you're targeted."

A Tennessee college student named David Kernell was convicted two years later on federal charges.

Last year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's free Microsoft Hotmail account was hacked after The Associated Press revealed that he and some top aides had used private email accounts to conduct state business at times when Romney was governor of Massachusetts.

The anonymous hacker claimed to have guessed the answer to a security question about Romney's favorite pet to gain access to the account and change the password.

Email security is "a constant concern" in presidential politics, Romney senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said Friday.

"What we learned is that no matter how secure you make your system, there is someone out there spending every waking minute trying to subvert it," he said.

Last year, a group of hackers known as the D33D Company published a list of what it said were usernames and passwords for more than 450,000 email accounts, including more than 25,000 AOL accounts. It was not immediately clear whether the Bush family's hacked AOL accounts were among those.

Interestingly, the hacker also revealed that George W. Bush enjoys painting. One photo showed Bush standing at an easel, dabbing at a canvas. Two other images were of paintings that seem to be self-portraits in which the former president is shaving in the shower and soaking in a bathtub. Neither shows any nudity.

On the Smoking Gun site, the word "Guccifer" was plastered across the photos in translucent, neon blue print. The site said "Guccifer" is a self-described veteran hacker who has long been in the government's sights.

Whoever targeted the Bush family was probably not a "high-tech nation-state adversary," Wallach said. "If it were, you wouldn't see their tracks. ... It's probably somebody who thought they could make a quick buck."

Unlike the email scams known as phishing that attempt to fool users into giving up bank account information and passwords, more sophisticated attempts called spear-phishing go after specific individuals or institutions, Wallach said.

According to the FBI, spear-phishing sends legitimate-looking emails that offer plausible explanations for requesting personal data, along with a link. Clicking on the link can download malware that gives the hacker access to things like address lists.

"It's hard to know what kind of miscreant we're dealing with here," Moore said. "It could be someone trying to seek attention to show they can do it. You target a political figure, you're trying to show, 'Nobody is above what we can do.'"

Guccifer could be outside the U.S., making things more complicated for authorities in pursuit, Moore said.

"Of all the famous people to pick on," he added. "I wouldn't pick on someone who has an entire law enforcement branch dedicated to protecting them."

International roundup: HTC One, Optimus G Pro, Three's LTE plans and a pink Galaxy Note 2

Android CentralAndroid CentralAndroid CentralAndroid Central

We're two weeks out from Mobile World Congress, and just over a week away from learning what HTC's been cooking up for its 2013 flagship device. That means there's plenty of international Android news to talk about this week, as we await the arrival of new devices from some of the biggest manufacturers around.

Starting with HTC, we've heard a couple of interesting rumors doing the rounds this week surrounding the company's upcoming "M7" flagship phone. Earlier in the week UK blog Pocket-Lint claimed to have details of new image sensor technology at work in the phone's camera. If the reports are to be believed, HTC's next big thing will pack a new 4.3-"ultrapixel" setup that uses a multi-layer image sensor, with one layer for each primary color. Supposedly this new tech will produce more accurate colors and superior fine detail, though as with any new camera tech, we'll have to wait to get our hands on it before we know for sure. (In the meantime, HTC's teasing a "new sound and camera experience" this year, so it sounds like there may be something to these rumors.)

Dell's largest investor opposes buyout as too low

(Reuters) - Dell Inc's largest independent shareholder, Southeastern Asset Management, on Friday vowed to fight a $24.4 billion buyout of the No. 3 PC maker led by CEO Michael Dell, cementing opposition to what would be the largest buyout since the start of the financial crisis.

Southeastern's opposition to the deal, which Reuters first reported late on Thursday, sets up a potential battle with billionaire founder Dell and private equity firm Silver Lake, who are pushing a deal to take the company private at $13.65 a share.

Southeastern, run by activist investor Mason Hawkins and owner of 8.5 percent of Dell, including options, argues that the company is worth $24 a share if its financial services division, recent acquisitions and other assets were factored in.

With Southeastern's objection, shareholders representing 11 percent of the Dell shares not held by Michael Dell have now said they will vote against the deal, according to news reports. Billionaire Dell, who created the computer maker out of his college dorm room in 1984, holds a roughly 16 percent stake.

Dell shares reversed course and climbed into positive territory on Friday after the announcement, and closed up 0.74 percent at $13.63.

"We are writing to express our extreme disappointment regarding the proposed go-private transaction, which we believe grossly undervalues the Company," Hawkins and Chief Investment Officer Staley Cates wrote in a letter.

"We retain and intend to avail ourselves of all options at our disposal to oppose the proposed transaction, including but not limited to a proxy fight, litigation claims and any available Delaware statutory appraisal rights."

Representatives of Dell and Silver Lake declined to comment on Southeastern's statement.

Sanford Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi estimates Hawkins' asset management house paid an average of more $20 a share for its stake, meaning a loss of at least $825 million at the current $13.65 offer price.

A LOOMING BATTLE

Under the buyout's terms, a majority of shares not held by Michael Dell must be voted in favor of the deal for it to proceed.

Memphis, Tennessee-based Southeastern believes the Dell board had several alternatives that would have produced a far better outcome for public shareholders, including breaking up the company and selling the units separately.

"Selling multiple business units to strategic buyers could easily exceed $13.65 per share," the letter read.

Dell was regarded as a model of innovation as recently as the early 2000s, pioneering online ordering of custom PCs and working closely with Asian suppliers and manufacturers to assure rock-bottom production costs. But it missed the big industry shift to tablet computers, smartphones and high-powered consumer electronics such as music players and gaming consoles.

Michael Dell struck a deal early this week to take Dell private for $24.4 billion in the biggest leveraged buyout since the financial crisis, partnering with Silver Lake and Microsoft Corp. The aim is to facilitate Dell's difficult transition from a commodity maker of computers into a provider of services to enterprises as a private company, away from Wall Street's scrutiny.

But Southeastern, the most prominent of a clutch of investors, including the Alpine Capital Research and Schneider Capital funds, which have voiced opposition to the buyout, on Friday argued that the company had the capability to pay a $12 special dividend to shareholders, realizing much more value while still retaining significant cash-flow.

It also suggested a Dutch auction or some other structure that would involve a public tender of shares.

Dell has now gone into a go-shop process, during which it can solicit better offers. But Hawkins and Cates argue that Michael Dell's involvement may affect that procedure.

"We are concerned that given the participation of Michael Dell in this transaction, that a traditional go shop process is not sufficient to ensure that the Company receives superior offers," they wrote.

Morningstar analyst Carr Lanphie said it is not a surprise that some investors do not like the offer price, but said the stock would fall sharply if the deal does not go through.

"The point being that if this doesn't go through, you are going to swallow a 35-40 percent decline in share price," Lanphie said. "Then, your chairman just had his attempted buyout rejected.

"Given the management they have lost in the last couple of months, will they be able to continue to grow the company? That is something the investors will need to consider," he added.

Iraq bombs kill 36, Sunnis stage protest rallies

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Car bombs struck two outdoor markets and a group of taxi vans in Shiite areas across Iraq on Friday, killing at least 36 people and wounding nearly 100 in the bloodiest day in more than two months, as minority Sunnis staged large anti-government protests.

Sunni protesters have rejected calls to violence by an al-Qaida-linked group, but there is concern that Sunni insurgents could step up attacks ahead of the April 20 provincial elections ? the first country-wide vote since the U.S. troop withdrawal more than a year ago.

On Friday, tens of thousands of Sunni protesters rallied in five major cities against Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite accused of monopolizing power. Sunnis also complain of official discrimination.

In the city of Samarra, rally speaker Sheik Mohammed Jumaa sent a warning to the prime minister. "Stop tyranny and oppression," he said. "We want our rights. You will witness what other tyrants have witnessed before you."

In the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi in restive Anbar province, demonstrators blocked the main highway to Jordan and performed Friday noon prayers, the highlight of the religious week. Anbar is a former al-Qaida stronghold that saw fierce fighting against U.S. forces.

Other rallies were held in the cities of Mosul and Tikrit, as part of weekly Sunni demonstrations that were sparked by the December arrests of bodyguards of a senior Sunni politician.

Earlier Friday, suspected Sunni insurgents detonated five car bombs, killing at least 36 people and wounding 97, health and police officials said. It was the bloodiest day of attacks since Nov. 29, when 43 people, many of them Shiite pilgrims, were killed in a wave of attacks.

Friday's bombings targeted an outdoor pet market in Baghdad's northern Kazimyah neighborhood, a vegetable market in the town of Shomali in Hillah province, south of the Iraqi capital, and a stand for taxi vans on the edge of the southern city of Karbala.

The assailants targeted particularly crowded areas. Iraqis converge on markets every Friday, the Muslim day of rest, to shop and spend family time. The vans on the outskirts of Karbala were waiting for passengers returning from noon prayers at the city's Shiite shrines.

In Baghdad, the first car bomb exploded around mid-morning at the entrance to the Kazimyah market, two police officers said. When panicked shoppers tried to flee the area, a second parked car exploded a few meters (yards) away, according to the officers.

The twin blasts turned several nearby cars into tangled piles of metal.

At least 17 people were killed and 45 were wounded in the two blasts, police said. All the victims were civilians.

About an hour later, two car bombs exploded simultaneously at the Shomali market, killing at least 14 people and wounding 36, two police officers said.

The car bomb on the edge of Karbala killed five and wounded 16, police said.

Health officials confirmed the casualty figures in each attack. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Violence has dropped in Iraq since the worst sectarian fighting in 2006-2007, but insurgents carry out near-daily attacks on security forces and civilians in an attempt to undermine the Shiite-led government.

The current spike comes just over two months ahead of the provincial election.

Hadi Jalo, an analyst at the Baghdad-based Political Decision Center for Strategic Studies, said he believes al-Qaida-linked militants in Iraq are trying to exploit the growing Sunni discontent.

"I believe that with this fertile atmosphere there will be more attacks ahead of the provincial elections," he said.
