BANGOR, Maine ? Bangor High School had never fielded an All-America girls soccer player until last year.
Now the Rams have two in a row.
Grace MacLean, a senior forward for the reigning Eastern Maine Class A champions, has earned All-America status from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, learning of that honor during the recent 39th annual Maine Soccer Coaches Association all-star banquet held at the Spectacular Event Center.
MacLean scored 33 goals this fall in leading coach Joe Johnson?s club to its third-consecutive regional title and a berth in the state championship match.
A team captain for Bangor, MacLean previously was named to the All-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference first team as well as an Eastern Maine Class A all-star and Eastern Maine all-class all-star, all for the second consecutive year.
MacLean joins former teammate Ashley Robinson as All-America girls soccer players from Bangor High School. Robinson received the honor in 2011 when she teamed with MacLean to lead the Rams to its first Class A state championship, and she now plays at the University of Maine.
MacLean was selected to receive this year?s All-America honor from among five players who earned All-New England accolades ? with Maclean receiving All-New England honors for the second straight year.
Joining Maclean in that category this fall were Caitlin Bucksbaum of Falmouth, Amanda Arnold of Thornton Academy in Saco, Maria Philbrick of Scarborough and Kaitlin Saulter of Hermon.
Saulter, a junior forward, had 29 goals and eight assists this fall to lead Hermon to the Eastern Maine Class B championship. She was named the Penobscot Valley Conference player of the year.
Arnold, also a junior forward, set school records with 24 goals and 56 total points in leading Thornton Academy to its first undefeated regular season in school history and first Southwestern Maine Activities Association championship.
Philbrick led Scarborough to its second Class A state title in three years and third straight Western Maine crown. The senior center back was part of a defense that yielded just five goals, and she was named the SMAA?s player of the year.
Bucksbaum was a four-year varsity starter who helped Falmouth win its third consecutive Class B state championship this season. The senior midfielder, the 2011 Maine Gatorade player of the year, had four game-winning goals and five game-winning assists this year.
J.P. White, a senior midfielder from Falmouth, was named the state?s 2012 All-American in boys soccer. White, who plans to continue his soccer career at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., next year, helped the Yachtsmen win the Class B state title three of the last four years and totaled 12 goals and 11 assists this fall.
White was one of four All-New England choices on the boys side, along with Connor Reagan of Gorham, Matt Saunders of Lawrence of Fairfield and Jimmy Fitzpatrick of Houlton.
Reagan was a four-year varsity starter who totaled 47 career goals and 29 assists. The senior forward was named the SMAA?s offensive player of the year after leading Gorham to a 12-0-2 record good for the No. 1 seed in the final Western Maine Heal point ratings.
Saunders was named the KVAC Class A player of the year after amassing 19 goals and five assists at Lawrence. A four-time KVAC all-star, Saunders will enter the U. S. Naval Academy next fall and plans to continue his soccer career there.
Fitzpatrick led Houlton to its second straight Class C championship. The Penobscot Valley Conference player of the year totaled 39 goals this fall to finish with more than 80 career goals.
Also selected were state players of the year for each class. Named Maine?s schoolgirl players of the year were MacLean (Class A), Bucksbaum (Class B), Alexis Desjardins of Fort Kent (Class C) and Mackenzie Worcester of Washburn (Class D).
Boys players of the year for Maine were Reagan (Class A), White (Class B), Ian Lee of Madawaska (Class C) and Tristan Richards of Greenville (Class D).
Several coaches also were recognized during the banquet, including Aaron Wilcox of Bangor Christian, the Region I (New England) private school coach of the year for the second straight year.
Wilcox guided the Bangor Christian boys team to its fourth consecutive Class D state championship this fall, as the Patriots finished 18-0 with its last 15 victories by shutout. Bangor Christian has won its last 42 matches under Wilcox.
Others nominated for Region I coaching honors were Mark Diaz of Scarborough (large school boys), Mike Carlos of Houlton (small school boys), Mike Farley of Scarborough (large school girls), Troy Kendrick of Richmond (small school girls) and Todd Dominski of Waynfete of Portland (private school girls).
Bangor?s Johnson was named the Eastern Maine girls soccer coach of the year, with Farley earning that honor for Western Maine. Carlos was named the Eastern Maine boys soccer coach of the year, with Diaz winning the Western Maine award.
