Former Anti-GMO Activist Says Science Changed His Mind

For years, British environmental activist Mark Lynas destroyed genetically modified food (GMO) crops in what he calls a successful campaign to force the business of agriculture to be more holistic and ecological in its practices.

His targets were companies like Monsanto and Syngenta ? leaders in developing genetically modified crops.

Earlier this month he went in front of the world to reverse his position on GMOs.

At the Oxford Farming Conference in Britain, Lynas apologized for helping "to start the anti-GMO movement" and told his former allies to "get out of the way, and let the rest of us get on with feeding the world sustainably."

He spoke to Jacki Lyden, host of weekends on All Things Considered, about his change of heart.

Interview Highlights

On 'discovering science'

"When I started off as an anti-GMO activist, it was very much an ideological position. I was scared of the new technology, you know, it just seemed to be messing with the basic building blocks of life. But what happened in the sort of 10, 15 years since then, is that I have written a couple of books on climate change, and I really fell in love with the scientific method as a way of establishing knowledge about the world. It eventually dawned on me ... that I was actually being anti-science in the way I was talking about GMOs, and that there are many ways a stronger scientific consensus on the safety of GMOs than there is about the reality of climate change."

On the 'saga of golden rice'

"One of the case studies that really changed my mind about this was the saga of golden rice, which was developed to be vitamin A-enhanced, because something like a quarter million children per year die from a vitamin A deficiencies in developing countries, particularly in South Asia ... Greenpeace has been waging a campaign to stop this rice from ever being developed ... You can make a pretty strong case that tens of thousands of children have died because they were denied access to this purely because it's GM, and there is a ideological bias against that."

On admitting fallibility

"I would be the first one to say that having been wrong before, I am not infallible now. For me, it's important to look at what the mainstream science is saying. We need to get on with developing more biotech crops because they can potentially be an enormous boon environmentally, and I think that is a message that has been lost in this debate so far."

(AP) ? Tiger Woods has missed the cut at the Abu Dhabi Championship after being penalized two shots for wrongly thinking he had a free drop after his ball became entangled in weeds.

Woods thought he had just made the cut by finishing his second round at 1-over 73. But he was advised by the European Tour chief referee of the penalty, giving him a 75 and 3-over total of 147. The cut for the top 65 plus ties is projected at 2 over.

Also missing the cut with a 75 was Rory McIlroy, who struggled for a second day with his new Nike clubs and posted a 6-over total of 150. Even a switch to his old putter in the round didn't help McIlroy.

Best Bang for your Advertising Bucks in 2013

As a business owner, you already know that marketing and advertising are two of the keys to business success, but did you know that how you use your advertising and marketing dollars can change from year to year? Unfortunately, many business owners don?t recognize this fact, and this leads them to use the same old tactics year after year, and doing so can ultimately affect how successful or unsuccessful these business owners are. If you?re interested in using your advertising and marketing dollars more effectively in 2013, here are some of the hottest ways to do so:

Social Media

During the last decade, social media has risen to truly become a useful advertising and marketing platform. In the past, social media was something of a novelty, but in 2013, it seems as though this technology is here to stay. In order to use social media effectively to market and advertise, you?ll want to reach broad audiences, but you?ll also want to focus on niches that are relevant to your business. When using social media, updating your profiles and statuses on a regular basis is also a key ingredient to success. Essentially, you?ll want to give potential customers a reason to keep coming back to visit your business online and tell their friends about it, and regular updates provide that reason.

Video

In the past, online videos were often low-quality, and due to slow Internet speeds, online videos didn?t give viewers a rich experience. Today, however, thanks to increases in loading speeds, quality and storage space, many business owners are finding that uploading videos about new products or services is a great way to attract new customers. Video allows potential customers to not only hear you talk about the latest happenings with your company, but it allows them to actually see what you?re talking about. In addition, many video applications and streaming sites now allow business owners to add annotations and links directly to their videos, and this can offer viewers a more interactive experience, once again leading to viewers sharing your videos.

Mobile Technology

Mobile technology is another area where many business owners are focusing their marketing and advertising efforts in 2013. Today?s smartphones, tablet PCs and other mobile devices are more advanced than ever, and as service providers are now offering higher speeds to wireless customers, many of these customers are demanding quality content on the go. Using mobile technology experts, like those from the 522 Digital, LLC ? Advertising Agency in the DC area, can create mobile versions of your websites and downloadable apps so you can give customers updates regarding new products and services and more.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is also projected to be a big part of 2013 for business owners who are interested in reaching more customers efficiently. Large search engines have been refining how they deliver targeted results to users on the web, and this means that your business website and online presences need to be optimized to the exact specifications set forth by these search engines in order to be found above your competition.

Finally, if you?re unsure of how to implement these new technologies into your marketing and advertising plan or budget, you might consider contacting a web marketing firm for help. A web marketing firm will be able to evaluate the unique needs of your business and make suggestions to help your business make 2013 its best year yet.

US futures jump after jobs, housing data

(AP) ? Stock futures jumped Thursday as the government reported that weekly applications for unemployment benefits hit a five-year low and the construction of new homes surged.

Dow Jones industrial futures rose 39 points to 13,476. The broader S&P futures added 6.7 points to 1,472.30. Nasdaq futures rose 13.5 points to 2,739.50.

Stocks were relatively flat before the housing and jobs data were released, weighed down by leaden quarterly performances from the nation's largest banks.

Citigroup fell short of Wall Street expectations for the fourth quarter, partly because of mounting legal expenses. Even excluding one-time charges in the quarter, the bank's per-share earnings were 28 cents below the predictions of analysts. Shares slid more than 2 percent before the opening bell.

Bank of America was dragged down by mortgage settlements in the fourth quarter, though it had already warned its shareholders of that. But the bank fell well short on revenue expectations and shares dipped.

Futures moved higher after the Commerce Department said that builders began work on new homes in December at the fastest pace since the summer of 2008.

The report capped off the best year for home construction since the real estate meltdown. Builders broke ground on houses and apartments at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 954,000, up 12.1 percent from November.

Shares of the country's big home builders rose in premarket trading, led by Hovnanian Enterprises in New Jersey.

New home construction for the year rose 8.1 percent, thanks to low mortgage rates and a recovering job market.

That trend continued last week.

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly unemployment benefit applications fell 37,000 to a seasonally adjusted 335,000. That's comparable to numbers seen just after the recession began.

The weekly numbers are subject to a lot of seasonal volatility, but the overall trend suggests an improving landscape.

Even the ongoing fight in Washington, which some economists had feared would spook employers, did not slow the pace of hiring.

Using Social Media to Engage eCommerce Customers | Business 2 ...

Social Media campaigns can be integral to marketing eCommerce businesses. However, just setting up social media accounts is not enough to make a company a social success. Social media communications are an outlet for the company?s online presence .

    Set Up and Presence

Engagement and interaction with a business? customers is the key. The first order of business for an online eTailer wanting to get into the social arena is to realize that the main goal of a social media campaign is not to increase sales; the top objective is to interact and engage with current and prospective customers, clients, and guests.

A good social marketing campaign with interaction can lead to increased profits through happy and engaged customers. When setting up a blog, Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn, and YouTube and any other pages or accounts for a business, it is important to take into consideration the branding, message, and alignment with current company image and outlook.

    Customer Service

Communication really is important and giving your social media campaigns a personality in line with the business? core values, outlook, and level of professionalism must be taken into consideration during development and throughout execution; do not let the moniker fool you into being too friendly.

Many customers look to contact businesses through online platforms, especially if they are an Internet-based business, so having a professional there to answer questions and support comments is very important. Response to all comments must be timely and tactful. Treat the people addressed in social channels as if they were guests at your retail location.

Just like any form of communication, online interaction is a two-way street, not just the company making announcements to the public. The employee who handles social media interaction needs to be trained in best practices as well as the customer service guidelines for the company.

Companies also need to have policies in place, not only for employees? personal accounts, but for the regulation of the company?s pages and guidelines and policies in writing as to what happens to an account in the event that an employee is no longer with the company.

Promotions of products, sales, special events

Social media communications definitely should include promotions of company products, sales, and special events. However, those messages need to be mixed in with engagement and the sharing of other relevant content. Consistent messaging of a business? information is still important, but it should not be the focus.

Making a weekly and monthly schedule of ?marketing? posts will help fan out the messages so that they are consistent, spread out over time, and mixed in with other types of posts. Sending several promotional messages out all at the same time is not best practices for social media.

Use messaging tools such as Buffer to schedule posts ahead of time if necessary. Treat those who interact with your business on social platforms as if they were guests at a retail location, or even guests at a party. The host of a party would not simply make one-sided announcements. Instead, mix it up with conversation back and forth and share other information that visitors will enjoy.

In addition to sales and promotions, social messaging can include important industry information, connections to the company?s other outlets, funny (yet tasteful) images related to the product, industry or company, tips and tricks, infographs, and seasonal messages or current events; all OF these can create a nice mix of integrated messages to keep the attention of fans and followers. One idea to keep those fans and followers engaged with your social channels is to ask questions and use polls so that participation is encouraged.

    Conclusion

When a company or brand decides to set up a socially integrated marketing campaign, the best practices is to make sure not to just set it up and think it will run itself. Social media is an outlet for the company?s presence online, customer service, and promotions; but engagement and interaction through the social platforms with a business? customers is the key. Always remember that communication through social channels is a two-way street; not just the company making announcements to the public.

We are pleased to provide you with the insightful comments contained herein. For a free assessment of your online presence, let?s have coffee.

Learning the alphabet of gene control

Jan. 17, 2013 ? Scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have made a large step towards the understanding of how human genes are regulated. In a new study, published in the journal Cell, they identified the DNA sequences that bind to over four hundred proteins that control expression of genes. This knowledge is required for understanding of how differences in genomes of individuals affect their risk to develop disease.

After the human genome was sequenced in 2000, it was hoped that the knowledge of the entire sequence of human DNA could rapidly be translated to medical benefits such as novel drugs, and predictive tools that would identify individuals at risk of disease. This however turned out to be harder than anticipated, one of the reasons being that only 1 percent of the genome that code for proteins was in fact possible to read. The remaining part, much of which describes how these proteins should be expressed in different cells and tissues, could not be understood. This, in turn, because the scientists did not know which DNA sequences are functional, and bind to the specific proteins called transcription factors that regulate gene expression.

"The genome is like a book written in a foreign language, we know the letters but cannot understand why a human genome makes a human or the mouse genome a mouse," says Professor Jussi Taipale, who led the study at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition. "Why some individuals have higher risk to develop common diseases such as heart disease or cancer has been even less understood."

The human genome encodes approximately 1000 transcription factors, and they bind specifically to short sequences of DNA, and control the production of other proteins. In the work published in Cell, the scientists at Karolinska Institutet describe DNA sequences that bind to over 400 such proteins, representing approximately half of all human transcription factors. Data was generated with a new method that uses a modern DNA sequencer that produces hundreds of millions of sequences, giving the results unprecedented accuracy and reliability.

In addition, binding specificities of human transcription factors were compared to those of the mouse. Surprisingly, no differences were found. According to the scientists, these results suggest that the basic machinery of gene expression is similar in humans and mice, and that the differences in size and shape are caused not by differences in transcription factor proteins, but by presence or absence of the specific sequences that bind to them.

"Taken together, the work represents a large step towards deciphering the code that controls gene expression, and provides an invaluable resource to scientists all over the world to further understand the function of the whole human genome," says Professor Taipale. "The resulting increase in our ability to read the genome will also improve our ability to translate the rapidly accumulating genomic information to medical benefits.

Will New Chinese Nuclear Reactor Design Crush Western Competition?

2013-01-11 ? Since the 11 March 2011 Japanese Fukushima Daiichi nuclear catastrophe, the global nuclear civilian power industry has absorbed the negative publicity and is set to grow over the next several decades.

According to a May 2012 report issued by the U.S. government?s Energy Information Administration, ?Nuclear generating capacity additions began in the 1950s and now top 346 gigawatts worldwide. The first nuclear reactor to produce electricity was a very small experimental reactor in the United States in 1951. Currently, 30 countries have nuclear power programs? Plans to add new nuclear capacity in North America and Europe are relatively small in comparison to those in such countries as China, Korea, and India. Projected increased electricity demand in rapidly developing countries coupled with energy security awareness and the desire to limit carbon emissions are contributing to the worldwide addition of new nuclear capacity.?

China currently has 15 operating nuclear power plants (NPPs) that provide roughly 12.5 gigawatts of generating capacity, and another 26 reactors currently under construction that will add another 30 gigawatts to the national grid. According to the pro nuclear industry World Nuclear Association, ?additional reactors are planned, including some of the world?s most advanced, to give a five- or six-fold increase in nuclear capacity to at least 60 gigawatts by 2020, then 200 gigawatts by 2030, and 400 gigawatts by 2050.

Now China may be preparing to infiltrate one of the West?s last technological areas of expertise, the construction of nuclear power plants. In the intense struggle for business in the Third World, Beijing may well score against such formerly high profile nuclear exporting companies as Westinghouse, Areva and Rosatomstrpoiekhsport.

Currently, there are 435 nuclear power reactors operating in 21 nations, with a combined capacity of over 370 gigawatt hours. In 2011 these provided 2518 billion kilowatt hours, roughly 13.5 percent of global electricity needs, with another 60+ power reactors are currently being constructed in 14 countries, including China, South Korea and the Russian Federation.

Accordingly, the potential global nuclear energy power market is worth hundreds of billions of dollars, which advanced countries felt was theirs to exploit.

Enter China, which could undercut the current Western monopoly.

China has come a long way in advancing its industrial base since the early 1960s, when
Mao Tse Tung advocated that peasants build backyard steel blast furnaces, which Soviet ally Nikita Khrushchev derisively dismissed as ?samovar capitalism.?

Boeing 787s grounded for inspections after emergency landing in Japan

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's two leading airlines grounded their fleets of Boeing 787s on Wednesday after one of the Dreamliner passenger jets made an emergency landing, heightening safety concerns over a plane many see as the future of commercial aviation.

All Nippon Airways Co said it was grounding all 17 of its 787s and Japan Airlines Co said it suspended all 787 flights scheduled for Wednesday. ANA said its planes could be back in the air as soon as Thursday once checks were completed. The two carriers operate around half of the 50 Dreamliners delivered by Boeing to date.

Wednesday's incident follows a series of mishaps for the new Dreamliner. The sophisticated plane, the world's first mainly carbon-composite airliner, has suffered fuel leaks, a battery fire, wiring problem, brake computer glitch and cracked cockpit window in recent days.

"I think you're nearing the tipping point where they need to regard this as a serious crisis," said Richard Aboulafia, a senior analyst with the Teal Group in Fairfax, Virginia. "This is going to change people's perception of the aircraft if they don't act quickly."

The 787 represented a leap in the way planes are designed and built, but the project was plagued by cost overruns and years of delays. Some have suggested Boeing's rush to get planes built after those delays resulted in the recent problems, a charge the company strenuously denies.

Both the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said they were monitoring the latest Dreamliner incident as part of a comprehensive review of the aircraft announced late last week.

    ALARM TRIGGERED

ANA flight 692 left Yamaguchi Airport in western Japan shortly after 8 a.m. local time (2300 GMT Tuesday) bound for Haneda Airport near Tokyo, a 65-minute flight. About 18 minutes into the flight, at 30,000 feet, the plane began a descent. It descended to 20,000 feet in about four minutes and made an emergency landing 16 minutes later, according to flight-tracking website Flightaware.com.

A spokesman for Osaka airport authority said the plane landed in Takamatsu at 8:45 a.m. All 129 passengers and eight crew evacuated safely via the plane's inflatable chutes. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said 5 people were slightly injured.

At a news conference - where ANA's vice-president Osamu Shinobe bowed deeply in apology - the carrier said instruments on the flight indicated a battery error, triggering emergency warnings to the pilots. It said the battery in the forward cargo hold was the same type as one involved in a fire on another Dreamliner at a U.S. airport last week.

"There was a battery alert in the cockpit and there was an odd smell detected in the cockpit and cabin, and (the pilot) decided to make an emergency landing," Shinobe said.

Marc Birtel, a Boeing spokesman, told Reuters: "We've seen the reports, we're aware of the events and are working with our customer."

The Teal Group's Aboulafi said regulators could ground all 50 of the 787 planes now in service, while airlines may make the decision themselves. "They may want to protect their own brand images," he said.

    UNDER REVIEW

Australia's Qantas Airways said its order for 15 Dreamliners remained on track, and its Jetstar subsidiary was due to take delivery of the first of the aircraft in the second half of this year. Qantas declined to comment further on the issues that have plagued the new lightweight, fuel-efficient aircraft.

India's aviation regulator said it was reviewing the Dreamliner's safety and would talk to parts makers, but had no plans to ground the planes. State-owned Air India has six of the aircraft in service and more on order.

"We are not having any problem with our Dreamliners. The problems we had earlier were fixed," Arun Mishra, Director General of Civil Aviation, told Reuters. "We are reviewing the situation now."

United Airlines, the only U.S. carrier currently flying the 787, said it was not taking any immediate action in response to the latest incident. "We are looking at what is happening with ANA and we will have more information tomorrow," a spokeswoman said.

Shares of Dreamliner suppliers in Japan came under pressure.

GS Yuasa Corp - which makes the plane's batteries - fell 4.5 percent, as did Toray Industries Inc, which supplies carbon fibre used in the plane's composites. Fuji Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and IHI slid 2.5-3 percent on a benchmark Nikkei that was 2 percent lower. ANA shares slipped 1 percent.

    PUBLIC CONFIDENCE

Japan's transport minister on Tuesday acknowledged that passenger confidence in the Dreamliner was at stake, as both Japan and the United States have opened broad and open-ended investigations into the plane after the recent incidents.

The 787 is Boeing's first new jet in more than a decade, and the company's financial fortunes are largely tied to its success. The plane offers airlines unprecedented fuel economy, but the huge investment to develop it coupled with years of delay in delivery has caused headaches for customers, hurt Boeing financially and created a delivery bottleneck.

Boeing has said it will at least break even on the cost of building the 1,100 new 787s it expects to deliver over the next decade. Some analysts, however, say Boeing may never make money from the plane, given its enormous development cost.

Any additional cost from fixing problems discovered by the string of recent incidents would affect those forecasts, and could hit Boeing's bottom line more quickly if it has to stop delivering planes, analysts said.

To date it has sold close to 850 of the planes to airlines around the world.

Israel - 3,000 Charedim Enlisted Into Israeli Military -- VosIzNeias.com

Israel - Approximately 3,000 haredim were enlisted into the IDF and will begin active service by August 2013, Maj.-Gen. Orna Barbivai told Israel Radio Thursday.

The head of manpower in the IDF said that the ultra-orthodox youth who received call-up orders had previously deferred their military service for religious reasons, and that this would be the first year that thousands of haredim would be required to perform mandatory military service.

In December, a government proposal was approved to allow 1,300 haredi yeshiva students to enlist in the civilian service program as opposed to serving in the military, but was greeted with widespread outrage from IDF draft reform advocates.

The decision was enacted in order to stymie the fall-off in numbers of recruits serving in the civilian service program following the expiration of the ?Tal Law? this past August. The number of active civilian service personnel currently stands at 1,450, down from 2,026 before the law expired.

The Tal Law created a legal framework for an estimated 54,000 full-time yeshiva students to indefinitely defer military service, but also established the civilian service program for haredi recruits in order to provide part of the solution to the low rate of ultra-Orthodox participation in national service programs.

Since no new legislation has been passed by the Knesset to replace the Tal Law ? which was struck down by the High Court of Justice in February as unconstitutional ? the 1949 Military Service Law (amended in 1986) mandating compulsory military service for all citizens reaching the age of 18 is now operative.

Why Girls Do Better At School

An anonymous reader writes "A new study explains why girls do better at school, even when their scores on standardized tests remain low. Researchers from University of Georgia and Columbia University say the variation in school grades between boys and girls may be because girls have a better attitude toward learning than boys. One of the study's lead authors, Christopher Cornwell, said, 'The skill that matters the most in regards to how teachers graded their students is what we refer to as "approaches toward learning." You can think of "approaches to learning" as a rough measure of what a child's attitude toward school is: It includes six items that rate the child's attentiveness, task persistence, eagerness to learn, learning independence, flexibility and organization. I think that anybody who's a parent of boys and girls can tell you that girls are more of all of that.' Cornwell went on about what effect this has had now that education has become more pervasive: 'We seem to have gotten to a point in the popular consciousness where people are recognizing the story in these data: Men are falling behind relative to women. Economists have looked at this from a number of different angles, but it's in educational assessments that you make your mark for the labor market. Men's rate of college going has slowed in recent years whereas women's has not, but if you roll the story back far enough, to the 60s and 70s, women were going to college in much fewer numbers. It's at a point now where you've got women earning upward of 60 percent of the bachelors' degrees awarded every year.'"

Google bringing YouTube Android app pairing, updated UI to more TVs

Google updated its YouTube app for Android back in November to allow for pairing with TVs equipped with Google TV, and it looks we'll soon be seeing quite a few more sets ready to work with your smartphone or tablet. The company confirmed today that new TVs from Bang & Olufsen, LG, Panasonic and Sony will be making their debut at CES, with additional sets and set-top boxes coming from Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Vizio, Western Digital and others over the course of 2013. In related news, Google's announced that its new UI for YouTube on TV -- previously seen on the Wii U and PlayStation 3 -- will also be featured on those new devices, offering full 1080p videos and a fairly minimalist interface. You can check out a quick video of how the pairing works after the break.

    93% Zero Dark Thirty

    All Critics (90) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (84) | Rotten (6)

Its performances are razor-sharp and detailed, the acting restrained, the timing perfect.

What it does in the course of telling a seminal story of our time is what contemporary films so rarely do, serve as brilliant provocation.

The genius of "Zero Dark Thirty" is that we feel exactly what those involved must have felt at the end. Not elation. Not the thrill of victory. Just relief.

A powerful, morally complicated work on an urgent subject. It is a film that deserves-that almost demands-to be seen and argued over.

Movies must move, and this one just lies there like a stack of paper from a classified government filing cabinet.

[Chastain's performance has] a lot of colors, and angles, and is guaranteed to be remembered come awards time. Maya's a real character, all right.

When you hear boots marching up your stairs, that guy who whispers "Osama, Osama" - It's not because you need to sign for a UPS package!

Densely detailed, superbly shot and acted, illuminating and thrilling, it is the best film of 2012.

The film builds steadily, but never tediously, to the long awaited mission to Abbottabad and the compound housing Osama bin Laden.

Spectacular performances, brilliant direction and tight scripting are all weaved into visual prose and potent source material to make Zero Dark Thirty not only great, but important.

It's like "All the President's Men" with torture and explosions, but no mention of presidents...

The decision one has to make is whether it's worth sitting through the first two hours, that provide a fine antidote for insomnia, to see the final 37 minutes.

A masterful piece of action filmmaking that succeeds in generating enormous tension by dramatizing a recent historical event in spite of the fact that everyone knows how it will end.

What makes the movie so effective is its protagonist, a doggedly determined CIA agent played by Jessica Chastain, who never loses sight of her goal in spite of repeated setbacks and bouts of political in-fighting.

The problem at the center of Zero Dark Thirty is that knowing and not knowing constitute a process, a process in which people tell lies and get hurt, in which costs can be overwhelming.

With a protagonist you lack the desire to root for and subject matter that's been shoved down our throats in the 11 years since 9/11, This is one of the only films this year where battling heavy eyelids is more exciting than the film itself.

The result is a remarkably thorough, unexpectedly cinematic, two-and-half-hour chronicle of American persistence.

There is something definitive about Zero Dark Thirty as a piece of filmmaking, as though Bigelow is concluding the entire ordeal for us on the big screen, as a film that could well earn her yet another Oscar.

While the film may not be the best of the year, its true winner is Jessica Chastain's knock-out, Oscar-worthy performance.

Zero Dark Thirty is a skillful -- and somewhat cautious -- look at military bureaucracy. It's both hampered and elevated by its dependence on authenticity.

Don't mess with the chicks. Osama bin Laden did, and look what happened to him.

Kathryn Bigelow's painstaking account of the events that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden favors dramatization over character and suspense.

There's no more perfect title for a film this year, because it manages to suggest a witching hour, a veil of deadly secrecy, and a pinpoint-honed logistical operation all at once.

Monitoring Your Credit in 2013 - Mint

    identity theft

Death and taxes are often referred to as the only ?certainties? in life.

I?d like to suggest one addition that has been guaranteed for the past dozen years, which is that identity theft will be the number one complaint to the Federal Trade Commission.

While you?re mulling over New Year?s resolutions for 2013, can I suggest that you consider the possibility of protecting your credit reports and reduce the chances that you?ll become a victim of identity theft?

There are three well-established methods of protecting your credit reports and they all have pros and cons.

But, one thing is indisputably true?they?re all better than doing nothing.

Low Risk of Being a Victim of ID Theft

If you?ve never been a victim of identity theft, you?ve never lost your purse, never had a credit card stolen and you are diligent about destroying materials with your name on them, then I?d suggest your risk of being an identity theft victim is pretty low.

For consumers who are in the low risk category, you may be able to get away with simply reviewing your credit reports from time to time.

You can do this for free at annualcreditreport.com (all three of your reports) and via websites like CreditSesame (your Experian credit report) and CreditKarma (your TransUnion credit report).

If you suspect your information has been compromised or could be used to commit credit fraud, then you can always add a fraud alert to your credit reports.

This is free and can be done at any one of the three credit bureau?s websites. I personally like the user interface at the Experian fraud webpage.

A fraud alert will let lenders know that your personal information may have been used to apply for credit and any applications should be confirmed with the consumer directly.

Fraud alerts can be placed for a few months or as long as several years, depending on your scenario. But, alerts are only effective if lenders read and comply with your instructions to contact you for authentication.

Moderate Risk of Being a Victim of ID Theft?

If your wallet has been lost or stolen or if you suspect that you may become a victim of identity theft, then a fraud alert may not be enough.

The second level of credit report protection is credit monitoring. Credit monitoring is a service that passively tracks your credit report/s for changes that may be indicative of fraud.

For example, if a new address, a new account or a new credit inquiry is added to your credit report, then a fraudster may have applied for credit in your name.

Credit monitoring is normally a fee-based subscription service that will run you in the neighborhood of $14 to $20 per month, but CreditSesame and CreditKarma both have free options.

You can monitor your Experian credit report for free at CreditSesame and your TransUnion credit report for free at CreditKarma.

myFICO has a fee-based subscription service that allows you to monitor your Equifax credit report and your FICO score (the one based on your Equifax credit report) for suspicious changes called ScoreWatch.

The fee-based subscription services will normally allow you to monitor all three of your credit reports via one service (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion.)

Finally, any good credit monitoring service will alert you via text message or email if something suspicious has hit your credit reports so you can react immediately.

High Risk of Being a Victim of ID Theft

If you?ve already been a victim of ID theft or you?ve gone through a bad divorce or break up, then you?re at significant risk of identity theft.

The strongest form of credit report protection is the credit freeze or security freeze (they?re the same thing).

A credit freeze takes your credit reports out of circulation and no lender or service provider can access them unless you allow them to do so.

A credit freeze is free if you?ve been a victim of fraud in the past. If you have not been a victim, then there is a one time nominal fee to freeze your credit reports.

The freeze prevents anyone with whom you do not have a lending relationship to pull your credit reports and/or credit scores. And, because no lender is going to extend credit without first seeing your credit reports, any new fraud is stopped before it starts.

Credit freezing can be cumbersome. You have to set up a security freeze account with each of the three credit bureaus and then ?thaw? them when you want to allow someone to access your credit reports.

Still, for someone who is at great risk of ID theft the inconvenience is a small price to pay for peace of mind.
